Unit 1 Identity Performance Evaluation

Unit 1

The performance I done for the unit 'Identity" was based on racism and discrimination towards immigrants. As a group we chose this because we're we come from is a huge part of our lives. Our upbringing, our cultural background, and where we grew up impacts our daily lives.

For my performance it had three people who came from different countries and just wanted to be accepted into the British society and adapt to the new environment. But sadly in this case the two mean girls didn't want to have them accepted and bullied and judged them on the way the spoke, dressed, and them as people, I played one of the mean girls and my role was to make them feel as dehumanised as possible. In the end, the mean girls said sorry because they realised treating someone that way is not the right way to live life and we should accept anyone despite what they look like, how they dress or the way the speak.

The message my performance was conveying was to accept everyone and don't be cruel to people just because that aren't the same as you they shouldn't be treated any different because at the end of the day we all breath the same air. We all have to have food and water to survive. Lastly, we were all made the same way.

The skills I used on stage to fulfil my role:
  • Confidence- I was confident on stage while playing the role which made the audience believe in my character and it engaged them.
  • Voice projection- I was very loud so everyone could hear me and also my character is a very loud and outspoken person so being loud was very important
  • Practice- I practised the performance so it ran smoothly and so I and my group was aware of what was happening
  • Use of space- I used my space well by making sure everyone could see the performance.
  • Range- I played two roles in the play which was a mean girl and a mother. I had to change from a mean person to a caring person. I had to play it so well that the audience would sympathise for my role as a mother whom was comforting her child and forget the mean role I played.
  • Time management- In my performance time management played an very important role as it helped run our piece smoothly. We needed time management so we would know when to say our lines and so it would give us enough time to change scenes and lastly so the audience could have enough time to understand each character.
  • Eye contact- I used eye contact to engage the audience and showing them eye contact was also a way of showing that my character was confident.
  • Body language- My body language was stood straight and walking with a high chest to show that I was confident and also showed my meanness- that I was popular and careless.
  • Face- My facial expressions allowed me to show the audience my emotions for example; when the three characters I was bullying and they were sat at my table my face that I was shocked and in horror to find them there or when I played the mother, my face showed that I was compassionate when my daughter told me she was getting bullied.
  • Memory and Practice- These two skills are combined because in order to remember your lines you have to practice. We practised our performances in Rob and Mandy's lessons
In conclusion to my evaluation, learning about the Unit 'Identity' helped my class to understand one another and as it was the first unit it brought us close as a class because Rob gave us homework which was to write a piece on what identity means to you. We sat around in a circle and one by one we explained what identity meant to us and we learnt each others stories- I think this made us respect each other and it builds up your confidence because to speak about identity it is such a big part of our lives.
